Jorge Posada Day at Yankee Stadium
Derek Jeter, Bernie Williams, among many other former Yankees are in attendance.
For that passion and effort, the Yankees on Saturday before their 6-2 win over the Cleveland Indians retired Posada’s No. 20 and unveiled a plaque in Monument Park honouring his 17-year career – all in navy pinstripes – in which he was a key part of four World Series championships.
“They’re champions. They all came up in this organization together and they led this organization to another great run and left it in a good place, too”.
Posada played for the Yankees from 1995-2011, appearing in the Fall Classic seven times and winning rings in 1996, ’98, ’99, 2000 and 2009.
Posada was a five-time All-Star and ranks eighth on the Yankees all time home run list. He played a remarkable 1,574 games of his 1,829 big league games behind the plate. “This is a kid that we all saw grow up in front of us (to) become a superstar”. “Someone the fans could really relate to”. Played extremely hard … was tough.
Sunday will be Pettitte’s day. He holds playoff records of 19 wins, 44 starts and 276 ²/₃ innings pitched, plus a career regular-season mark of 256-153 with a 3.85 ERA across 18 seasons, 15 with the Yankees.
Well, back in June when the Yankees were on the road in Houston, Andy Pettitte and CC Sabathia met in the visitors bullpen, and “Dandy” Andy handed his old friend a baseball.
“He was obviously a very skilled player”, Girardi said.
“Ever since I could remember all I wanted to do was play baseball”. A switch-hitting catcher with power, patience, and a fiery attitude?
