Jets QB out 6-10 weeks after being punched by teammate
The once starting quarterback suffered a broken jaw and is out now 6-10 weeks, while Ikemefuna Enemkpali was fired by the Jets. Smith reportedly has a broken jaw and will require surgery. He hadn’t yet undergone the procedure as of late Tuesday afternoon.
He told reporters: He got cold-cocked, sucker-punched, whatever you want to call it, in the jaw.
And in Tuesday after, same day the altercation happened, Enemkpali immediately released a statement saying he was sorry for what had happened. “It had no reason for happening”.
“This isn’t a UFC match”, guard Willie Colon said.
Todd Bowles wasn’t happy with either player involved in the fight. And cornerback Darrelle Revis agreed, adding, “I hold both of them responsible, just the way it played out”.
“It’s something we don’t tolerate”.
Brian Costello of the New York Post confirmed the report, noting that Smith had to back out of the event at the last second when someone close to him passed away.
“We’re all professionals and we all have to be able to control our temper and whatever the situation is”, he said.
“I have no regrets of things that I’ve done”, Newton said. He went on to say it was not his intention to harm anyone and that he should have walked away from the argument. “I appreciate that opportunity I had with the Jets”. Although the quarterback position was still thought to be a weakness, some felt that incumbent Geno Smith could have a solid season in a new system, considering the additions New York made on offense over the offseason. It has forced Ryan Fitzpatrick into the starting role and a pair of rookies – Bryce Petty and Jake Heaps – to move farther up the depth chart.
“I’ll let them tell you”, Bowles said of Smith and Enemkpali. There is usually veteran leadership also to make sure things are smoothed out, and don’t blow up. You dont walk up to another man and punch him in the face.. Smith was one our candidates to improve this season as a starter, largely because of how well he fits in offensive coordinator Chan Gailey’s system.
This is Smith’s third NFL season.
Fitzpatrick has 11 years of NFL experience, most recently with the Tennessee Titans, where he started nine games last season.
