Burning Man infested with bloodthirsty bugs
The state’s Department of Agriculture is sending a bug expert all the way to the remote Burning Man site to collect samples of the offending critters infiltrating the makeshift city.
An infestation of unidentified insects (stinkbugs seem to the internet’s collective best guess so far) has infested Burning Man.
‘They’re everywhere, ‘ the festival’s blog website confirmed. “We’re definitely not interested in providing a typical festival atmosphere.” Goodell claims that Nevada is imposing a 9 percent entertainment tax on Burning Man, threatening long-term sustainability and handicapping revenue.
Curley wrote: ‘All we know is that if you pick up some wood, you’re likely to uncover hundreds or thousands of the things’.
Professor John Hafernik said these bugs appear to be what are called stink bugs. They crawl all over you.
“Insects can respond quickly and reproduce rapidly, so you can get a high number in a short period of time”, Hafernik said.
Despite Burning Man’s clashes with the EDM world being a significant point of contention between Black Rock City fans and its administrators, the biggest issue surrounding it is actually Nevada’s entertainment tax.
The bugs, which appeared mysteriously within the past week, have been tiny, stinky nuisances for the construction crews, overtaking the spots designated for the commissary tent and depot. They’re embedding in carpets like spilled rice. A good-sized green bug fell to the ground.
We’re told that these types of bugs are particularly attracted to bright lights and dark clothing, so if you’re concerned about getting bugged, wear light-colored clothing that provides good coverage. “Bugs have crawled up inside her visor and nestled around her eyes”, Curley wrote.
He suggests these bugs are usually seen at an entirely different point of the year, but the spring and summer rains caused them to hatch now.
Though organizers hope to be rid of the insects by the festival’s August. 30 start date, state entomologist Jeff Knight says they will be there to stay for at least two weeks.
