Astros Pitch No-Hitter vs. Dodgers
After striking out Justin Turner on his 134th pitch, 30-year-old Fiers threw his glove in the air in celebration. Seattle’s Hisashi Iwakuma tossed a no-no on August 12. This was something else, though.
“In that moment, for me it’s once in lifetime” Mike Fiers said of his complete game no hitter. In his seven innings, he did not walk a batter and struck out five.
Former Astros ace Nolan Ryan was on hand and applauded from a suite as Fiers’ teammates charged the mound to celebrate. In the sixth inning Evan Gattis mashed home run number 18 into the Crawford Boxes to add an insurance run.
Cespedes led off the eighth with a chance to tie the major league record for most home runs in a game.
Then there were his close bonds with Dodgers shortstop Jimmy Rollins. “It’s all about winning games”.
Good: The Brewers: Milwaukee dismantled the Nationals 10-3 to improve to just 53-70 on the season. 500 at 60-61. Friday night was his first win with the team.
The no-hit watch didn’t end quickly for Astros fans. 184 with 17 strikeouts in 20 games since he was acquired by Houston. He accomplished this by only allowing 1 hit through a very dominant shutout performance. He also collected two hits. Herrera’s single and Freddy Galvis’s sacrifice fly put the Phillies on top 2-0 before Eickhoff’s two-run single. Six Houston pitchers combined to throw one against the Yankees on June 11, 2003. The right-hander, however, is 4-0 with a 1.50 ERA in seven starts at home, where he last pitched July 29.
Offensively, two home runs would be all Houston needed to polish off the win.
In the fifth inning, Chase Utley tripled into the right field corner, but upon replay review his odd-bounce hit was shown to have hit the foul pole after bouncing, reducing his hit to a double. Kazmir, who was ripped for six runs and nine hits in his last outing against Tampa Bay, has permitted 13 runs and four homers during his skid.
C – Blake Swihart, Red Sox: Swihart crossed the plate three times and had two RBIs in a 4-for-4 effort against the Royals. “Obviously, he’s walking into a territory that he’s never been and there’s so many people that are rooting for him to finish and get the outcome that he got”. All three runners advanced, and Suzuki followed with a bloop past the drawn-up infield.
Runs figure to be at a premium in the Greinke vs. Kazmir matchup. Greinke (13-3) saw his MLB-leading earned-run average rise to 1.67.
RANGERS 2, TIGERS 0: Colby Lewis pitched seven strong innings to help Texas beat Detroit.
Houston pitchers had retired 30 straight Dodgers until Rollins singled, and he was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double. “There are a couple of guys on our club that, if they were out there in the outfield, maybe we would, but Kiké’s not one of them”.
Giants 6, Pirates 4: Madison Bumgarner (15-6) homered in his second straight start and struck out six in 61/3 innings to lift visiting San Francisco.
