Kerrick trial protests take violent turn
Some of the protesters wore masks and shouted at officers, but there were no confrontations at that time.
The only Charlotte Police officer who thought Kerrick shouldn’t have fired was a policy writer who wasn’t at the scene, Capt. Mike Campagna. Officer Randall “Wes” Kerrick, who was charged with voluntary manslaughter, didn’t seem to point out a lot emotion when the choice was learn. The defense countered that Kerrick was justified in firing the shots, because he believed Ferrell posed a threat to his life.
Prosecutors stated nonlethal pressure ought to have been used to subdue Ferrell, a former Florida A&M soccer participant, in September 2013.
From the incident in 2013, Officer Kerrick shot Ferrell 12 times after Ferrell had been in a severe vehicle accident, knocked on a woman’s home for help – one Sara McCartney – who not only turned down helping him but called the police and claimed someone was trying to break in.
Jibril Hough, spokesman for the Islamic Center of Charlotte and one of the Friday demonstrators, commended police for permitting the peaceful protest.
Kerrick’s family left the courthouse without comment.
Ashley Williams, a UNC Charlotte student who works with Black Lives Matter, has been watching the trial and said she would be dissatisfied with a mistrial. Two officers with Kerrick didn’t hearth their weapons. Putney said the officers suffered minor injuries. Round Four:15 p.m. the jury was referred to as again into the courtroom and the jury foreman stated they remained deadlocked. It is not known which way they were voting. “Anything else we need to take up this afternoon”, Ervin said.
Defense attorney George Laughrun called for the mistrial, saying jurors were at an impasse after deliberating for a total of 19 hours.
“There’s no reasonable probability the jury will reach a verdict in this case”.
The jury has resumed its deliberations in the trial of a white police officer accused in the fatal shooting of an unarmed black man two years ago.

A state training expert testified that Kerrick’s decision to draw and use his pistol complied with state law enforcement training and CMPD directives on the use of lethal force.
If convicted, Kerrick faces up to 11 years in prison.
