Peters: Suggs’ Cheap Shot Was Planned
Lewis-Moore didn’t participate in Friday’s walk-through, while Canty has been eased into the preseason and has yet to appear in a game. While these joint practices have a variety of benefits, at times they become overly competitive and can turn disastrous like we saw with the Washington Redskins and Houston Texans last week.
Happened on Mathews’ 14-yard TD run in the first quarter, and happened again on Murray’s two-yarder. And yes, nobody could have realistically expected any better, especially from a squad with so many new key pieces.
Steve Spagnuolo’s defense showed more improvement in the second game, bending but not breaking and setting up one of Josh Brown’s five field goals with a sack and a forced fumble by former Jacksonville linebacker J.T. Thomas.
Carolina’s Cam Newton struggled in his first game without wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin, finishing 4 of 10 for 42 yards with an interception.
Daniel Jeremiah of the NFL Network also came to that same conclusion Saturday night.
At the same time, it was something on which to build.
Tebow might have done enough in practice to make up Kelly’s mind about whether he’ll make the 53-man roster, and maybe the Eagles were auditioning Barkley for a trade.
“It was probably not the one I had in mind when I said that”, Bradford said after the Philadelphia Eagles’ 40-17 victory. “He talks a lot and I think he’s that type of player – who is dirty and will take shots on the quarterback“.
“I didn’t think about my knee once I got out there. So right now we are good lactose-intolerant secondary”.
For his part, Suggs was vehement that what he did was well within the letter of the law of the game, despite the fact that he was flagged on the play.
The Eagles defense intercepted Baltimore starting quarter Joe Flacco before he was was replaced by Matt Schaub. “Hope we can put another day together today”. His right arm was just hanging there. Sam Bradford survived his lone drive in command of the first-team offense, orchestrating a touchdown drive to open the scoring for the Eagles.
Bradford confirmed that he thought Suggs was intentionally going at his injured knee, and he had words with Suggs about it.
“We took a big step”, Davis said. “I really don’t know him personally, so I don’t know”.
The injuries to Hurst, Monroe and Wesley – coupled with injuries that prevented Rick Wagner (leg), Kelechi Osemele (Achilles’), Jah Reid (back), John Urschel (concussion) and undrafted rookies Darryl Baldwin and Blaine Clausell from dressing for the game – left the Ravens with just nine healthy offensive linemen by the end of the first quarter.
Bradford only played 14 snaps. Tim Tebow, Matt Barkley and Mark Sanchez are also in the rotation.
Bradford finished the night 3-of-5 for 35 yards.
One of the most exciting plays of the game, though, was provided by Kenjon Barner, who returned a punt 68 yards for a touchdown in the second period. “It was good. I took a few hits tonight. I constantly have to evolve, I can’t get complacent with where I’m at”. In the process, he gave Eagles fans exactly what they wanted – a glimpse of a possible future with him playing quarterback. Barnes in turn had one touchdown on six carries.
