Andy Murray dedicates Montreal Masters win to coach Amelie Mauresmo
Murray, 28, moved up above Federer to second in the ATP’s latest rankings on Monday, courtesy of his dazzling displays in Montreal culminating in 6-4 4-6 6-3 victory over Serb Djokovic in an absorbing three-hour duel.
Murray got the decisive break in the second game of the final set but had to survive an 18-minute service game to consolidate his lead in the fifth game before claiming his third title on the Canadian hardcourts, and first since 2010.
Murray beat Djokovic 6-4 4-6 6-3 to take the Rogers Cup on the hardcourt in Montreal, Canada.
Andy Murray dedicated his Rogers Cup victory to coach Amelie Mauresmo after announcing that she had given birth to a baby boy on Sunday morning. “It would have been easy for me to let that one slip away but I fought well and stayed calm in the important moments of the third set“. “I didn’t allow Jeremy to find his forehand too much; one break per set was enough to win the match, could have done some things better but a win is a win“, said Djokovic, who did not face a break point the entire match.
Both players were keen to lay down a marker ahead of the US Open, which begins later this month, and that was evident during fierce early sparring, but first blood went to Murray. I lost in the first round of a tournament last week in a match many probably weren’t expecting me to lose. “But I’m happy with my good week”.
Andy Murray cited fatigue after bowing out to an unseeded player in the second round of Washington Open.
He had not beaten Djokovic since the 2013 Wimbledon final.
“Someone is smoking weed, I can smell it, I’m getting dizzy”, Djokovic told the umpire after winning the first set.
It appears that for some people, the high of watching one of the world’s best athletes battle it out on court just isn’t enough. He stepped in, played some great shots.
“But I also have the experience of playing in finals of the biggest events”.
“I don’t know the answer because we haven’t obviously discussed that yet”, he said. I’m trying my best. “Every day is a new day, I try to bury the pain, play with the pain, it is part of what we do”. “When I reflect on the week, of course it’s positive”, said the top seed.
‘I need to make sure I recover well from this.
