Usain Bolt wins men’s 100m gold
Justin Gatlin (right) congratulates Usain Bolt after the Jamaican won the men’s 100m final in Be … Yet, with Bolt out faster and level with him at 50m, he tightened up horribly in the last 30 metres and staggered through the line as Bolt flew through. Meanwhile, Bolt had nearly suffered an early exit after stumbling out of the blocks.
It more than showed the challenge Bolt faces in Sunday’s final. The Jamaican also won the event in Moscow in 2013, while also winning the gold in the same in the last two Olympics.
Instead, Gatlin was the one to crack when the heat was on.
He has now won the 100m title at the World Championships three times- ninth medal at the showpiece event- and will be looking to complete the sprint double later on in the week in the 200m.
“That’s for you guys to write”, he told reporters. “Me, I was the chaser, so it was different”.
“I was screaming. I was screaming because I didn’t know what was going to happen”, Bolt’s father, Wellesley, said after a harrowing night in the stands. “It’s a simple thing”.
With only the 800-meter race to come later Sunday, Ennis-Hill has 5,706 points, 86 points more than Nadine Broersen of the Netherlands.
Bolt sent out a series of tweets after his historic win.
“I am speechless, all I can say is wow!” said de Grasse, whose time was a personal best.
With American Justin Gatlin the hottest of favourites in the 100m at the world championships in Beijing, the sport was bracing itself for a public relations nightmare.
Farah, who came through the youth and junior ranks alongside Bolt, has made the headlines for all the wrong reasons in recent months, with his American coach Alberto Salazar accused of violating several anti-doping rules.
Does this cement his place as the most dominant in any sport? “My aim is to be number one until I retire and therefore I am pushing myself and pushing myself”, said the 29-year-old after striking his trademark “Lighting Bolt” pose. Both 20, they finished 1-2 in the NCAA 100-meter championship this summer.
Bromell was speechless sitting near Bolt and Gatlin after the race. “No, I’ve had pressure since 2011”, he said. “My whole life I’ve been watching them on YouTube, watching videos and it’s just insane. Relax, go out there and execute.’ That is what I did”.
For the first time in world-championships history, advancing to the final of the 100 required a sub-10-second performance. Except that the package was in danger of not arriving on time for the Beijing World Championships. France’s Jimmy Vicaut and China’s Bingtian Su rounded out the finishers.
Bolt had a better start than the American, but Gatlin caught up only to stumble near the 70-meter mark leaving Bolt the chance to take advantage and produce a stunning display.
