16-year-old Indian-origin student Anmol Tukrel creates a personalized search
An Indian-origin 16-year-old Canadian citizen has created a search engine, which is said to be up to 47 percent more accurate than Google, Economic Times reports.
This search engine although was designed as a part of Anmol’s project for the competition that was to be submitted to Google Science Fair, which is a global online competition that is open to students aged 13-18 years.
He claims that his search engine is better than Google because it not only takes into account location or browsing history but also tries to understand context and meaning.
His development kit included only a computer with at least 1GB of free storage space, a python-language development environment, a spreadsheet program and access to Google and New York Times.
The accuracy of his search engine and the Google was compared by him using news articles from the reputed press, ‘The New York Times’. In a conversation with TOI, he revealed that earlier he thought to do something that can personalize the search space. “It was the most genius thing ever”, Tukrel told the publication. In the meantime if you’d like to take Turkel’s search engine for a spin, you can do so by checking out the files he’s uploaded onto Google Drive.
The new CEO of Google, Mr. Sundar Pichai, who has just been awarded with this designation, can not help cursing his luck. Is this search engine accurate? “For someone to look at a successful Google product and attempt to go one level up, it’s astonishing”, said Sanjay Ramakrishnan, cofounder of Ice-Cream Labs, and former marketing head of Myntra. Tukrel is a student of Holy Trinity School in Toronto, and learned to code in Class 3. He was quoted as saying, “My computer teacher was pretty impressed with the project”.
