Woods 2 strokes behind Gore after 3rd round at Wyndham — News+Notes
But Love wanted to make it into the top 125 and qualify for the PGA Tour’s FedEX Cup playoffs that begin next week.
He was poised to challenge Sunday, starting just 2 strokes off the lead.
“Any victory now when you’re over 50 is really sweet”, Love, who earned a berth in the lucrative FedExCup playoffs with the win, told reporters.
Davis Love shot a superb final-round six-under 64 to become the third oldest victor in PGA Tour history at the Wyndham Championship. The Wyndham trophy bears the same of the man who was – Sam Snead, whose eighth and final victory in Greensboro was in 1965, when Snead was 52.
None of them was Woods.
Even with that blemish, Woods posted a third straight round in the 60s for the first time this season.
I can go out there tomorrow and make a run and get myself up there and make some birdies. Gore shot a 62 and leads a group of three, including Tiger Woods, by three strokes.
Love said the pair’s performance at Sedgefield Country Club showed neither Woods, nor himself, have lost their touch.
He ended up three-putting for triple-bogey. After the break, he was all but dead squaring back-to-back bogeys on 13 and 14, before rallying with a 25-footer for eagle at the par-5 15th to get back to 16-under.
Following his round, Woods was asked if he knew anything about Hoge, a rookie who, as fate would once again have it, has played 79 Tour rounds?
On the other side of things, Scott Langley bogeyed four of his last six holes to miss out on the playoffs. He will face Virginia junior Derek Bard of New Hartford, N.Y., in the 36-hole final Sunday. Born in Charlotte, he was an All-American at North Carolina and twice won the tournament when it was played at Forest Oaks Country Club.
He rolled in a 12-footer for birdie at 16 to move within one shot of the lead, and made another par save with a testing four-foot downhill putt at 17. He then birdied the first hole, causing pandemonium.
Now comes a break before his next tournament, the Frys.com Open in October in northern California.
Andrade closed with a one-over 73 to finish at nine-under 207 at TPC Snoqualmie Ridge in Washington.
Woods had already lost ground on the leaders after an erratic, outward 35, and his chipping problems returned at 11 when he shanked his first pitch, duffed his second and took three more to get down.
It might behoove him to add another of the fall events on the PGA Tour’s schedule – perhaps the McGladrey Classic, which Love hosts – and attempt to get a jump on the new season.
Bernhard Langer and Jeff Freeman have been tied for second.
His last win came at the 2013 WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.
He even took the time to sign a glove on the fifth hole and give it to a woman in the gallery before taking his fairway shot. Four players tied for second, including Kristoffer Broberg of Sweden who surged up the leaderboard with a course-record 62. Ryu had a 64, and Kim shot 68.
Broberg made nine birdies in a bogey-free round at the Himmerland Golf & Spa Resort in Aalborg.
