Instagram finally stores high-resolution images – The Next Web

The higher-resolution pictures are not yet being displayed as such by Instagram, which maintains its smaller default for now.

Although the photo sharing service has experienced enormous growth since its launch in 2010 and its acquisition by Facebook two years later, its actual technology has remained in some respects painfully primitive. The first result should be the one you’re looking for.

The higher resolution will likely improve the experience for many of Instagram’s 300 million users.

Users can now view 1080 by 1080 pixel images on the desktop version of Instagram by opening the page’s source code. As times has gone on, however, that has changed and limiting image size to 640 pixels has seemed archaic.

At the moment, images uploaded are in a very poor-quality 640×640 resolution, which is a throwback to the network’s origins. This means that images will no longer have to be stretched to fit larger phone screens.

User frustration over Instagram’s stubbornness on sticking with the archaic 640×640 resolution was clearly starting to show.

The option is not official, and Instagram has made no statement regarding the discovered source code, but we are being optimistic about the future of Instagram, and hoping the higher resolution option is offered soon.
