Spanish wife with no pilot training lands
“He died, possibly before the accident, during the flight”, an emergency services spokesperson told the Guardian.
Seville… The woman’s ordeal happened near the south-western Spanish city.
Air traffic controllers talked the woman – who “had no notion of flying” – through the procedure for around 90 minutes before she brought the micro-light aircraft in for an emergency landing on Sunday.
In released recordings of their conversation, the controller can be heard reassuring the woman, “You’re going to continue and you’re going to land without any problem, okay?”
A USCA spokesman said the woman was extremely fortunate that the controller on duty knew how to fly the type of plane she was in. Don’t worry the plane is not going to crash.
“The plane can fly without any problem”.
Then he asked her to make sure the plane’s compass was pointed south. After it became clear that she wasn’t sure how to do that, he told her, “Keep turning it until you see a hairline on the compass directly over an S”.
Woman: S as in Sevilla?
“S for Sevilla”, he responded.
The plane caught fire, but the woman was able to walk away from the crash with just some burns and bruises.
A hospital spokesman said on Monday (Aug 24) the woman suffered multiple injuries but her life was not in danger.
Emergency services said Saturday they scrambled a helicopter and a plane to try and guide the micro-light down after hearing the pilot had apparently lost consciousness while at the controls.
The plane crashed about three kilometres short of the beginning of the runway at Seville airport during the attempted landing, according to Spain’s airport authority AENA.
