Rescuers search Lake Michigan after report of man overboard
A man who reportedly went overboard from a shipping vessel in Ludington early Sunday morning, August 23, still hadn’t been located, authorities said, as of Monday morning, August 24.
Mason County officials are investigating, Sheriff Kim Cole said.
Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan received a report just before 2 a.m. Sunday, from the motor vessel Stewart J. Cort, a 989-foot, U.S.-flagged freighter owned by the Interlake Steamship Company, that they had a man overboard approximately 3-4 miles offshore of Big Sable Point. Morris said the man was wearing jeans and a yellow shirt and apparently no flotation device. Wynne declined to release his name.
A search started Sunday by the Coast Guard has been suspended indefinitely.
Mason Co. MI (NNCNOW.com) – The Coast Guard has suspended its search on Lake Michigan for a man who allegedly jumped overboard from a freighter.
Search efforts had not resumed as of Monday afternoon, the Coast Guard reported, with waves in the area still forecast to reach 6 feet and gusts in excess of 30 miles per hour possible.
Aircrafts and a number of commercial ships had searched the area for the man.
