University leaders outraged after vulgar signs greet incoming freshmen
Broderick was joined in outcry by Sigma Nu’s executive director, Brad Beacham, who also chided the banners as “offensive”. “Such language has no place in our Fraternity or within any caring community, such as that of ODU“, he said in a statement sent to the Daily News on Monday. While four members of the ODU chapter live in the building where the banners were displayed, initial information indicates individuals not associated with Sigma Nu Fraternity are responsible for the banners.
– The president of a Virginia college is “outraged” and has pledged action after several vulgar signs directed at incoming female students – and their mothers – were draped from the ledges of nearby off-campus houses. “The fraternity will remain in close communication with ODU administrators throughout its investigation and review”.
He added: “While we constantly educate students, faculty and staff about sexual assault and sexual harassment, this incident confirms our collective efforts are still failing to register with some“.
‘Ours is a community that works actively to promote bystander intervention and takes a stand denouncing violence against women’. Through video, online and in-person content, we layer education on these topics for all of our students throughout the year.
Broderick wrote that a young woman told him she had seriously considered going back home after she saw the signs but was reassured when she read the responses from other students on social media.
Old Dominion University also posted two videos to social media to redeclare its sexual assault policy and combat the perception of the university as one that condones sexual violence and perpetuates rape culture.
The crude welcome mats quickly paved the way for a likely enlightening semester for the culprits with the university’s president vowing to punish anyone found having violated the school’s code of conduct.
