Casey Anthony prosecutor: No crime committed on website
Orlando’s Fraternal Order of Police is calling for an external investigation of Orange-Osceola State Attorney Jeff Ashton after he admitted to frequenting the Ashley Madison cheating website two years ago out of a “curiosity” for an extramarital affair. “They were incredibly stupid choices”.
“I ask for the public’s forgiveness for my shortcomings, but those choices have absolutely no impact on the performance of my official duties”. He said he indulged a curiosity by joining the site, but claimed he never met anyone in person and no laws were broken.
The East Orlando Post first reported Ashton’s Ashley Madison account on Saturday.
Ashley Madison suffered an unprecedented hack last month, apparently exposing names, email addresses and phone numbers, among other information, for some of the website’s 37 million members.
“My hope is only that this incredibly poor judgement in a personal matter will not be compared by the public to 35 years of what I hope were very, very good judgements”, he said during an afternoon news conference Sunday.
Ashton insisted that the “bad, childish, stupid error” was a personal one and would not affect his work as a state attorney.
Several times he looked like he was fighting back tears, particularly when asked how his wife was handling this situation. Additionally, should the new allegations be proven true, it would appear as though Mr. Ashton was not completely truthful during his press conference. He also has four older children from previous marriages, the biography said.
Ashton was the prosecutor in the Casey Anthony murder trial in 2011 before defeating his former boss, Lawson Lamar, in an open primary for the 9 Judicial Circuit in 2012.
The prosecutor isn’t the only Florida elected official who has had to acknowledge using Ashley Madison.
Many probably remember Jeff Ashton as the assistant state attorney who rose to worldwide fame after miffing the prosecution of suspected child killer Casey Anthony. I regret that I have given ammunition to those who seek to discredit the work our office does. I am proud of the work that we have accomplished thus far.
