Brian Hoyer gets nod as Texans starting quarterback
The Houston Texans quarterback competition is reportedly over – Brian Hoyer has emerged as the 2015 starter. Hoyer, who signed a two-year deal with the Texans in March, has primarily been competing with Ryan Mallett for the starting job.
Perhaps coach Bill O’Brien is practicing his coin flip in the privacy of his office just in case that is how he will determine who starts at quarterback for the Texans.
A strong-armed quarterback with prototypical size, Mallett needed a good performance against the Broncos to unseat Hoyer, but Mallett did very little during the 14-10 loss, prompting O’Brien to call the showing on offense “really subpar.” At best, Hoyer is a potential streaming option in 2015. Neither quarterback led a scoring drive in the first half Saturday.
Hoyer in two preseason games has completed 9 of 15 passes for 119 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions. Solomon remarked that Hoyer looked “like a frightened rookie” while Mallett did nothing to either lose or gain ground.
Hoyer, a former undrafted free agent with the New England Patriots, spent the first three seasons of his NFL career backing up future Hall of Famer Tom Brady.
Hoyer was the safe choice.
A few questions to get the discussion going on this Sunday afternoon for you… O’Brien believes the 29-year-old can run his offense without making mistakes. However, when he steps on the field, the glimmer fades. Instead he flopped. The lackluster performance and inconsistent management made it easier for O’Brien to move forward with Hoyer. Barring injury, Brian Hoyer will be the team’s starter for its Week 1 game against the Kansas City Chiefs.
