Ashton’s ties to the Ashley Madison website have instigated an internal Orlando County investigation, according to a WFTV-TV report.

Ashton said he deeply regretted his affiliation with the site but said the shortcomings have had no impact on his professional life.

Ashton said he was “so curious how this could exist”.

Ashley Madison suffered an unprecedented hack last month, apparently exposing names, email addresses and phone numbers, among other information, for some of the website’s 37 million members. “I want to publicly apologize to each of them for this embarrassment and for my blatant disregard for their feelings…While I indulged my curiosity about the site, it never went beyond that”.

He would later write a book and leverage his fame to defeat his boss in an election to become State Attorney for Orange and Osceola Counties.

He used his personal lap top on an office wireless network that is available to anyone who is at the courthouse complex in downtown Orlando, Ashton said.

He is famous for leading the prosecution’s case against Casey Anthony for the alleged murder of her two year old daughter Caylee but the six week trial in 2011 saw Casey being found not guilty of first degree murder, aggravated child abuse and aggravated manslaughter of a child.

Ashton insisted his visiting the website had no bearing on his job, but he said he did access the site during work hours.

Ashton said despite having an account on the site, he never actually met anyone using it.

“I hope the public will judge me on my 35 years of service, and not a bad mistake”, he said. He would not say what influence the revelation has had on his marriage.

The prosecutor is not the one Florida elected official who has needed to acknowledge utilizing Ashley Madison.

The City of Orlando said it will also be checking to make sure no employees have accessed the website on city internet or while working. I regret that I have given ammunition to those who seek to discredit the work our office does. “I am proud of [my] work, and what we’ve accomplished thus far, but today I’m not very proud of myself”.
