Kyle Busch races to 8th Xfinity victory at Bristol
Joey Logano held off a fast-closing Kevin Harvick to win Saturday’s Irwin Tools Night Race at Bristol Motor Speedway.
“It’s just such a driver’s racetrack”, said Logano, who also led all 300 laps of the spring Xfinity Series race there. Hamlin would end up third by the end of the night, with Jimmie Johnson turning up fourth. Held up by Brad Teague, Busch was forced up high and briefly dropped behind JR Motorsports’ Kevin Harvick, but he too didn’t take long to gather himself back together and work his way forward and into the lead once more on lap 27. That Harvick couldn’t get his auto to do the same proved the difference.
Vettel was running third behind Hamilton and eventual second-place finisher Nico Rosberg when his right rear tire exploded ending any hope of a podium finish for Ferrari, that had executed a one-stop strategy for the race.
“It was just a decent average finish”, said Hamlin. “I just want to get through it, we’ll be fine”. “I couldn’t get my auto to rotate across the center like I needed it to, and every time I tried to force it, it would snap the back out”. He slapped the wall a couple of times during the race and spent only about 27 percent of the event in the top 10 and less than half the race in the top 15. I think all in all, it’s just a huge credit to the team.
Buescher was leading when the eighth caution of the race with five laps remaining set up a green-white-checkered finish.
Logano has gained on a superspeedway within the Daytona 500, on the street course at Watkins Glen and now Bristol’s brief monitor.
Edwards and Logano went back and forth with the lead for several laps before Edwards had to pit with a flat tire on Lap 353.
Hamlin came out of the pits first during Larson’s caution, and he kept the lead until Busch again passed him on Lap 154.
Chris Buescher appeared to be one of the few drivers capable of keeping Kyle Busch out of victory lane at Bristol Motor Speedway.
“I don’t care who I’m racing, it’s all about the win and I don’t care if I had to beat my sister to win the race”, he said. “Just the middle of the straightaway it made that pop where you knew that was it”.
Joey Logano: Winning for a third time this season means he’s going to be one of the top seeds in the Chase, which is now just three races away. The difference now is I’m ready to go race for championships and I wasn’t then. Clint Bowyer, Aric Almirola and possibly Kasey Kahne are battling for what looks to be the final spot, although a win from a new driver would quickly change things. “We needed this”, Bowyer said.
Helio Castroneves won the pole Saturday at 220.530 miles per hour, a strong push toward yet another drive at his first career championship with two races left in the season.
