Nation’s top high school quarterback commits to Vols
The number one quarterback in the nation committed to the Vols on Sunday.
Johnson, from Brownsburg, Ind., alerted coach Butch Jones and his staff Sunday and chose the Vols over Notre Dame and North Carolina State.
“Johnson, a 6’2” rising junior at Brownsburg (Ind.) High, has more potential than both players, and he continues an impressive run of quarterback recruiting under coach Butch Jones.
Higgins committed to Tennessee over offers from Alabama, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Ole Miss and Texas A&M, among several others. “Hunter Johnson, being one of the country’s elite, that’s going to do a lot for Tennessee’s favor with guys like Tee Higgins”. I don’t think he’s done maturing physically. He gets pigeon-holed as a pocket passer, but he’s athletic. “The football jumps off his hand and he can hit any point on the field with accuracy”, Rivals.com’s Josh Helmholdt said. He can extend plays with his legs.
More information will be added as it becomes available.
Now the Vols have landed Johnson, their first commitment for 2017. Tennessee is ranked 25th in the preseason AP Poll and has a shot to finish near the top of the SEC East.
Jones wanted to build a solid foundation for Vol football.
The Indiana native is the only 2017 commit for the Volunteers at the moment, but Inside Tennessee’s Danny Parker said he is a game changer for recruiting. Just about every team in the SEC has strong recruiting, so Jones will have to prove his ability to develop those players.
It’s a little too early to project what Tennessee’s depth chart may look like by the time Johnson arrives.
A late-season surge by current quarterback Josh Dobbs may have piqued the interest of some top quarterback recruits.
