2Day faces overhaul for 2Morrow – Malton and Pickering Mercury
The show, in previous years called Today at Wimbledon and this year re-titled Wimbledon 2Day, came under much scrutiny from audiences who simply wanted a highlights round-up of each day’s events, but were presented with uninterested audiences, freakish camera angles, and awkward interviews. “Tennis fans criticised Wimbledon 2day for showing hardly any tennis”.
The live studio audience will be axed as of Monday, with the programme moved to a studio in Centre Court rather than the “Gatsby Club”, a corporate hospitality pavilion where fans stood around behind the presenters.
The changes have been met with poor reviews, with 56% of Digital Spy users now declaring the show awful, while 29% said it could do better and just 14% giving their seal of approval.
The Corporation refused to say how many more it had since the adverse publicity erupted.
Wimbledon 2Day, hosted by Clare Balding, was launched with the goal of being less formal.
On Twitter, viewers said it was a “car crash” and “garbage”.
Despite the figures, a campaign has been launched for Inverdale to be reinstated and he joked that he had “never had been so popular”. “The new set will take the highlights show closer to the action”.
Asked about the programme on Monday, Judy Murray, mother of the British No 1, said that Balding was “an extremely good interviewer, but I guess maybe they are experimenting with a slightly different type of format”.
The Guardian’s Stuart Heritage made a similar point: “Everyone hates it – and, let’s be clear, they really do hate it. They hate it because it can’t decide whether it wants to be Top Gear or The One Show, when actually it should be a sober review of matches that people missed because they were working”.
The BBC was inundated with an “avalanche” of complaints, according to the Daily Mail.
