Foo Fighters ‘rickroll’ Westboro Baptists
The band countered the protest by driving by in a truck and blasting out “Never Gonna Give You Up”. The rockers’ concert in Kansas City met with its usual protest by the W.B.C., but this time Dave Grohl and his bandmates chose to “rickroll” the controversial church.
The church, which is known for protesting military funerals with wildly insensitive signs, were picketing outside the Sprint Center in Kansas City, where the Foo Fighters were scheduled to perfom.
During their Wasting Light tour in 2011, Foo Fighters dressed as rednecks and sang a song called “Keepin’ It Clean” on the back of a flatbed truck to troll the church.
Not only did broken and dislocated bones not stop the Foo Fighters this year, they came back with Dave Grohl in a throne of his own design.
Later on at the show, Grohl explained the reasoning for the stunt prior to “My Hero”, saying, “We figured, you know what, why don’t we just f***ing Rick Roll their ass?” You better believe there was video (warning: video includes a rather large man in a rather small bathing suit).
Whatever the case may be, the Foo Fighters are never going to give him up.
According to BBC News, the protest consisted of around 40 people from the Westboro Baptist Church who are notorious for revolting against the LGBT people, Jews, and politicians since 1991.
Grohl said the band didn’t have much time to plan their appearance, but “there’s nothing like a little Rick Astley in your life”, and dedicated the song to “everyone who stands up for what they believe in”.
