Liverpool’s Ibe and Gomez named in England Under-21s squad
Gomez put in a stellar display against Arsenal, whilst Ibe was largely ineffective off of the bench.
Gareth Southgate is looking to rebuild after the disappointment this summer’s European Championship when the Three Lions failed to progress beyond the group stages in the Czech Republic.
Liverpool duo Jordon Ibe and Joe Gomez, along with Everton’s Brendan Galloway, are among 14 uncapped players included in the England under-21 squad for the forthcoming matches against United States and Norway.
Gomez has turned heads with his superb performances early on in his Liverpool career.
And the 34-year-old, who joined Sky Sports News headquarters on Monday to announce he has signed for Indian Super League side Delhi Dynamos, believes Gomez has all the ingredients to be a success with the Merseysiders. Ibe has also continued to impress after brief involvement with the Reds first-team last season.
As a result of his form, the 19-year-old started in both of Liverpool’s opening two league games – but struggled to recapture his electric form.
The 18-year-old was particularly impressive in the Monday Night Football clash with Arsenal where he won five tackles, made five interceptions and also completed four clearances at The Emirates.
He did come on as a late substitute, but was again unable to make his desired impact.
Ibe has recently committed his worldwide future to England after interest from Nigeria who he is eligible to play for too.
Eight of the 23-man party have been capped at U21 level before, including Arsenal’s Calum Chambers, Tottenham’s Eric Dier and Southampton’s Matt Targett.
