Bus shears off part of Queens building; some injuries
The red bus, which was contracted by Resorts World Casino, crashed into the two-story building at the northwest corner of 63rd Avenue and Woodhaven Boulevard around 2:24 pm.
The driver of the bus was cut from the wreckage, and seven others onboard were injured, fire officials said. In an attempt to avoid hitting the vehicle, the bus driver made a sharp right turn and struck the corner of the building at 62-87 Woodhaven Blvd., smashing through the structure and badly damaging it. According to the news outlet, a green auto was wedged perpendicular to the bus.
“I saw people scattered all over the sidewalk on backboards”, said photographer Roy Renna, who arrived on the scene shortly after the crash.
The Department of Buildings and Emergency Services Units were on the scene. The gaping hole left by the bus exposed a room lined with bookshelves. Those hurt were transported to local hospitals.
CBS New York reports at least seven people were injured, though the extent of their injuries and conditions was not yet known.
A spokeswoman for Resorts World Casino said it was unknown if the passengers were headed to the Jamaica racino, but the company was cooperating with the investigation.
