UFC Fight Night 74 results: Max Holloway defeats Charles Oliveira via weird
UFC Saskatoon was ticking along nicely before it’s main event bout between Max Holloway and Charles Oliveira. “I hope he can make a full recovery”, Holloway said in his post-fight interview.
Max Holloway and Charles Oliveira are without a doubt the two biggest prospects in UFC’s featherweight division, and perhaps the entire promotional roster.
And Oliveira was more than willing to follow the same line of questioning with virtually the same answer, only slightly in reverse.
They Said It: “I don’t know what it is”.
What’s up with that? What was even more exciting was his quick KO victory in the curtain-jerker fight on the Saskatoon card, thus giving hardcore UFC fans something to be excited about in the latest stock of 205 pounders.
The Holloways closed on the house three weeks before the fight with Oliveira, and moved in just one week later, so it has been a little bit hectic on the family. Holloway has had the pleasure of being the only man within the promotion to push the interim champ, Conor McGregor, to a decision since interim champ was signed to the roster. When you lose in the UFC it’s a hard loss and you start at the bottom again. MMA is a cruel sport that does fighters no favours as they continue their uphill battle against Father Time; kudos to Frankie for knowing this was not a path he wanted to take.
Holloway admitted he had a pretty good idea this fight was going to happen after Oliveira defeated Nic Lentz by third-round submission at UFC Fight Night 67 back in May.
“Everybody send prayers to Charles. Holloway versus McGregor, you’ve got money with the [rematch] in that fight”. With wins against the likes of Oliveira and Cub Swanson on his resume, the Hawaiian has his sights set on an even loftier challenge for his next bout. It was anticlimactic finish, however, Oliveira suffered a freak injury early in the first round of their featherweight contest, seemingly hurting his neck when he tried to stop a Holloway takedown attempt. Well, his January 2008 TKO win over Drew McFedries is no longer the last UFC finish on his resume.
Nicknamed “Do Bronx” which means the ghetto, an Oliveira match is often an event to watch as it brings action and a lot of drama. If there is any fighter in this UFC bout that has a fantasy factor, it is the Ukrainian Moroz. “He rocked me and I rocked him…” He is fresh off a submission victory over former UFC no. 1 contender, Josh Koscheck. And with just eight UFC victories total that’s called making your mark. Kicking things off with a 0.41 second arm bar of Darren Elkins, his ground game has become the most respected part of his game. Silva is a fighter who is far better than his UFC record suggest, but his usual recklessness will cost him as the more measured Magny counters Silva’s attacks to get a decision win.
“We rented for a couple years and it wasn’t fun paying someone else’s mortgage”, Holloway told Yahoo Sports. If the Canadian can put Sims against the cage and work a take-down, the fight could be over.
