Flames sign Giordano to six-year contract
In a busy summer, getting Giordano signed has been general manager Brad Treliving’s No. 1 priority.
The Calgary Flames have come to terms with defenseman Mark Giordano on a new contract extension.
The new deal will carry an annual average value of $6.75 million, meaning the team’s captain will earn $40.5 million, per Chris Johnston of Sportsnet. He’s scored 245 points in 510 career regular-season games while playing a physical brand of defense in his own zone, which has helped him accumulate a plus-38 rating across nine seasons.
Giordan reached the National Hockey League All-Star Game last season and was a finalist for the NHL’s Foundation Player Award.
Moving forward, Calgary’s captain has a hefty task ahead of him.
There will be concerns, of course.
For now, though, the deal is perfectly affordable – even a bargain for the club with Giordano’s recent production – and it puts Calgary one player from wrapping up all the signings they hoped to get done this off-season.
As ESPN’s Craig Custance noted in the wake of the announcement of the deal, Giordano will be 32-years-old by the time the extension kicks in, making the lower level AAV more understandable.
