‘Casualties’ after chemical leak at Fife leisure centre
An emergency evacuation of St Andrews East Sands Leisure Centre has taken place following a leak of sodium hypochlorite at the swimming pool complex.
Scottish Ambulance Service said the injured would be taken to hospital, with triage teams treating several people at the scene.
There are a number of ambulances at the scene as well as specialist teams.
The centre includes a swimming pool and a gym.
Scottish Fire and Rescue is responsible for co-ordinating the response to any incident involving hazardous materials.
‘Emergency services and staff are still on site but all customers have left the area. All persons were accounted for.
The Scottish Ambulance Service’s special operations team provides a specialised emergency response to major incidents across Scotland.
Sodium hypochlorite is a chemical compound which becomes bleach when it comes into contact with water.
East Sands is a large leisure centre with a sloping beachside pool, tropical fun area, spa and gymnasium.
Fife Sports and Leisure Trust which operates the centre said among those affected were two members of staff were referred for medical assistance for “minor breathing irritation”. “They heard a bang in the plant room”.
