Louisville’s James Quick named Paul Hornung nominee

LSU sophomore running back Leonard Fournette was one of 44 players selected to the 2015 Paul Hornung Award watch list, the Louisville Sports Commission announced Monday.

The award is named after football legend Paul Hornung, a Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback at Notre Dame and an NFL Most Valuable Player with the Green Bay Packers whose versatility earned his enshrinement in both the college and professional football Halls of Fame.

Shelton had 1,114 all-purpose yards for the Spartans last season, 173 yards and two touchdowns coming on 16 receptions, 148 yards and two touchdowns via 21 carries and 793 yards and a touchdown on 31 kick returns. He also won the Pac-12 Conference title in the long jump in May. He enters the 2015 season as the Georgia Tech career leader in yards-per-return average with 25.9 yards per try.

Boise State’sShane Williams-Rhodes was the only other Mountain West player named to the watch list.

The victor will be honor at a banquet at the Galt House Hotel in February. He also tied for the most passes defensed in the Big Ten with 15.

The 2015 Watch List was compiled by a panel of college football experts based on a combination of 2014 statistics, career performance, SID recommendations and expectations heading into the 2015 season.

Among NCAA individuals, McGuire finished 29th nationally in rushing yards, 19th in all-purpose yards (1,848) and third in yards per carry (7.61). Profiles of each player and information about the Award can be found at www.paulhornungaward.com.

Seven players from the Big Ten conference were named to the list, though a player from the Big 10 has yet to win the award in its five-year history. Nelson stood out as a punt returner and led the team in special teams tackles with 17. Reminiscent of Hornung during his playing days, members of the Watch List demonstrated a knack for scoring numerous ways.
