Hanley Ramirez: Hanley confirms he’s moving to 1B next year
The Red Sox had a 4-2 lead headed into the bottom of the seventh inning, but starter Wade Miley was tagged for three runs, and the rest was history.
LHP Eduardo Rodriguez, coming off a bad start in Miami and guilty of four outings in his previous 11 where he allowed between six and nine runs, was brilliant in winning his seventh game on Tuesday night. Thompson’s double ended Miley’s night and gave him the loss in a 5-4 victory for the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field. With a new regime in Boston, it makes sense that the experiment of Ramrirez in left field is beginning to be scrapped.
Boston Red Sox interim manager Torey Lovullo confirmed that the team gave left fielder Hanley Ramirez reps at first base Tuesday in hopes of shifting him back into an infield role. He was 0-for-4 with three strikeouts.
The Red Sox will finish out their series against the White Sox on Wednesday with another 8:10 p.m. ET start. But three more hits and a walk later, the White Sox had a 5-4 lead, and Miley was subbed for Alexi Ogando.
– Ogando and Tommy Layne both kept Chicago’s lead at just one run.
“He will be awful at first base”, said Bertrand. In the top of the third, Mookie Betts hit a line drive to the base of the wall in left for a double, moved to third on the throw home as Josh Rutledge scored, then came in himself for a little league home run as the ball got away from Geovany Soto, putting the Sox ahead 2-1.
Chicago got its second run in the fourth inning on an RBI single from Thompson to score Jose Abreu. Hanley, a former shortstop, happily revealed the plan while acknowledging that the Red Sox are better off with Mookie Betts, Jackie Bradley Jr., and Rusney Castillo patrolling the outfield on a regular basis. Boston added two more runs in the sixth, with Betts scoring on an RBI double from Sandoval and Travis Shaw scoring Sandoval on a fielder’s choice.
