Report: Nate Diaz returns against Michael Johnson in December
Heavyweights Junior dos Santos and Alistair Overeem will finally square off, as officials announced the bout as a co-main event for UFC on FOX 17.
Overeem relentlessly called out the Brazilian slugger, whom, it’s worth noting, will train for this pivotal fight at American Top Team (ATT). They were scheduled to fight in May 2012 when dos Santos held the championship, but Overeem tested positive for an elevated testosterone-to-epitestosterone ratio and was denied a fighter’s license in Nevada.
Johnson (16-9, 8-5 UFC) had won four in a row before a bout with Beneil Dariush earlier this month, where he lost a very controversial decision.
So, UFC on FOX 17 is shaping up to be pretty, pretty good, as it will be headlined by a lightweight fight between Donald Cerrone and champ Rafael dos Anjos.
The surgically-repaired Dos Santos (17-3) has been riding the pine since last December due to a bum knee (among other things).
The event will go down on Orlando, Florida, one week after the also stacked, UFC 194 card. The enigmatic lightweight hasn’t competed since last December 2014, but he’ll make his return to the cage against Michael Johnson at UFC on Fox 17 this December.
“Cigano” and Overeem were slated to meet inside the Octagon two times before, but the former K-1 and Strikeforce heavyweight champion pulled out both time for different reasons. Their bout is a rematch of their fight in 2013, where dos Anjos won a unanimous decision over Cerrone.
