Injuries to Benjamin, Delmas mar Dolphins-Panthers scrimmage
Carolina receiver Kelvin Benjamin and Miami safety Louis Delmars both suffered season-ending ACL tears during drills which dampened a lively atmosphere featuring huge fan attendance.
In a statement, Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman said, “Obviously, we feel very bad for Kelvin”.
According to the Carolina Panthers, Benjamin tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.
The 6-foot-5 receiver tried to make a cut toward the sideline during individual drills, slipped and fell to the ground holding his knee. Whenever I see any player go down with what appears to be a devastating injury I get a pit in my stomach.
Benjamin put no weight on his left leg as he went to the cart.
Benjamin was taken off the sector on a motorized cart.
Suh even got a chance between plays to talk with Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, who came under fire past year for calling the fiery defensive tackle “Donkey Kong Suh” several times during a press conference.
Unfortunately for them, there aren’t many good ones.
While no one on the roster can compare to KB13, the Panthers do find themselves with an abnormally deep wide receiving corps ready to face the challenge. He is coming off a stellar rookie season, catching 73 passes for 1,008 yards and nine touchdowns and is expected to be the main target for Newton this season in the passing game. Funchess has also been ruled out of Saturday’s game as he deals with a hamstring injury he sustained on Wednesday.
A reporter asked him Wednesday if there was an advantage practicing against a playoff team (the Panthers won the NFC South in 2014). Hill was a practice squad player last season, but he could have gotten playing time after Benjamin’s injury. It was great seeing the staff, equipment guys, trainers who worked on your body and helped you out.
Only one players fantasy outlook has sky-rocketed more than Funchess, and that would be tight end Greg Olsen.
Head coach Ron Rivera said Funchess wouldn’t play against the Dolphins but could be back in practice as soon as Monday, per Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer.
Of course, this is all purely speculation right now, but former Colts receiver Reggie Wayne makes a ton of sense for the Panthers right now.
“It’s not going to change the complexion of what we want to do or how we’re going to do it”, Rivera said.
