Students Safe, Suspect in Custody Following Incident at Philip Barbour High School
The 14-year-old male suspect police say is responsible for a hostage situation at Philip Barbour High School Tuesday is in jail after an emergency hearing before Barbour County Circuit Judge Alan Moats.
Everyone else was quickly shuttled to safety, first to the school’s football field and then home via bus.
The suspect agreed to let the hostages go following initial negotiations, and later agreed to put the gun down and surrender.
Baylous says the suspect has been taken to a hospital for evaluation.
According to West Virginia State Police, authorities are at the scene of a “school incident” in West Virginia.

Students were finally taken off school grounds by bus or picked up by their parents around 4 p.m. Even as they were leaving, the full impact of the situation hadn’t sunk in for some students. Poling said because the case involved a juvenile, the court process would be closed.
West Virginia State Police say a high school has been evacuated after a report of someone with a gun inside the school.
WVSP says no students were in danger and the school was evacuated.
Baylous didn’t immediately have further details. They then went across the hall to tell another teacher, who alerted school officials.
Philippi is a city of some 3,000 residents about 130 miles south of Pittsburgh.
