Person Hit by BART Train at Embarcadero Dies, Station Remains Closed
A person hit by a BART train died in an apparent suicide at San Francisco’s Embarcadero station Monday afternoon, BART and fire officials said.
BART riders had a challenging commute day Monday as the system suffered delays and shutdowns in the wake of equipment failure, suspect chase in a transit tunnel and the Embarcadero station shutdown.
BART Police Lt. Paul Kwon said police were called around 11:20 a.m., after reports two men were engaged in a fight on a train.
BART spokesman Jim Allison said at about 2:30 p.m. that the San Francisco medical examiner’s office is responding to the scene.
“Yes, we do have a fatality at the Embarcadero station”, tweeted San Francisco BART on Monday afternoon. When police arrived, the suspect jumped onto the tracks and ran into a tunnel bore between the Lake Merritt and Fruitvale stations, Allison said. Trains are being held at Lake Merritt and some are even being turned south of the station.
The Fremont and the Dublin/Pleasanton lines were shut down to enable police to search for the man in the tunnel.
Forte said the officers later learned that the suspect had allegedly taken a cellphone from a victim before running onto the tracks towards the Fruitvale station.
The station remains closed and systemwide delays persist.
