Boy, 14, in custody after holding students, teacher hostage at West Virginia
No injuries were reported in the incident.
Barbour County Prosecutor Leckta Poling wouldn’t specify what charges would be brought against the male student. Poling said that because the case involves a juvenile, the court process would be closed. Police have not identified the student.
Classes at the high school started back on August 13, according to the district’s website.
A teacher and 29 students were held against their will inside of a second-floor classroom at Philip Barbour High School in Philippi leading to 911 calls around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, state police said. No injuries were reported.
Mr Woofter said Philippi Police Chief Jeff Walters negotiated the release of the students from the classroom and eventually got the suspect to surrender a few hours after it began.
After negotiations, the suspect agreed to set free hostages and later surrendered himself, said the statement, adding that the motive remained unknown. Saltis said by phone that his daughter attends the school and that “a lot” was going through his mind while he waited for her to head home. “Their ability to keep calm in this situation made it much easier for officers to successfully perform their duties, which resulted in positive conclusion to an incident which easily could have developed into a tragedy”, the State Police news release said.
The rest of the school was evacuated and students sent home in buses. “The suspect has been isolated and law enforcement on the scene are now working toward taking the suspect into custody”. “That’s the way it works”. He could not confirm reports of a student with a gun.
State Police spokesman Lt. Michael Baylous said the matter began as a “hostage-type situation” at the Philip Barbour High School in a north-central area of the state thought he didn’t elaborate on exactly what had happened.
