Galaxy S6 Edge Shortages Cloud Samsung’s Q2 Sales, Financial Expectations

Samsung’s second-quarter sales came to 48 trillion won, down 8.31 percent from 52.35 trillion won a year earlier.

“Shipments of the Galaxy S6 were clearly not as strong as had been hoped for”, said Greg Roh of HMC Investment Securities, citing manufacturing delays that trimmed sales of the S6 Edge. That compares with the 53tn-won average of 37 analyst estimates.

Samsung is scheduled to introduce the Galaxy J series to India in Sept.at the latest, according to industry sources and market research firm Strategy Analytics on July 6. But the research firm said the chance of Samsung’s flagship models overtaking Apple’s iPhone 6 series was small due to the production issue of the curved glass.

Samsung Electronics is slowly recovering, but it’s still not there yet, according to its second quarter earnings guidance.

Other smartphone manufacturers, however, fared not quite as favorably, Milanesi said. Of those surveyed, 20 have cut their forecasts in the past 30 days by an average of 3.9 percent.

The figure would still represent the highest quarterly operating profits at Samsung since the second quarter of 2014.

Samsung Securities last month lowered its shipment estimate for S6 models to 45 million units this year from 50 million previously.

In late April, executives said on a conference call with analysts that the company would be able to meet demand by the end of June.
