Governor orders review of NM school districts’ hiring
He was arrested in Denver in July 2013 on suspicion of sexual assault involving two children – one who an affadavit says was assaulted while in Martinez’s care and the other on a trip to Las Vegas.
Gov. Susana Martinez has requested a prompt audit of whether New Mexico school regions are leading opportune criminal record verifications of new representatives in light of disclosures that an abnormal state Albuquerque region director was contracted in spite of confronting kid sex misuse indictments in Colorado.
Denver police also arrested Martinez earlier this year in February on a domestic abuse case involving two charges of violent assault.
The Albuquerque Public Schools superintendent’s claim that he was unaware a former deputy superintendent had not completed a background check is being disputed by a district official.
Embattled Albuquerque Schools Superintendent Luis Valentino is facing calls for his resignation for hiring an administrator facing child sex charges.
A Denver judge revoked two bonds totaling $100,000 that Martinez posted in 2013 following his arrest in Colorado.
His whereabouts weren’t immediately known Tuesday morning, said district attorney’s spokeswoman Lynn Kimbrough.
One victim told police he came forward because “Jay has been touching people”, the affidavit said.
The review will also look into school district’s requirements for receiving timely background checks. The children knew Martinez as Jay. But she said there’s been no word as to whether Martinez will turn himself in today.
Prosecutors said Martinez was not supposed to leave Colorado under his bail terms.
Reportedly, the interim assistant superintendent for human resources for Albuquerque Public Schools had warned Valentino on several occasions that Martinez’s background check was still incomplete.
“This was a horrific breach of trust for the parents of APS”, Balderas told The Associated Press on Monday.
The Governor’s office says DPS and PED staff will work directly with each school district and charter school to conduct an immediate review of personnel policies relating to criminal background checks to ensure compliance with state law and provide guidance on how these policies should be strengthened and improved.
The Albuquerque Public Schools board is scheduled Thursday to vote on Valentino’s future after only two months on the job.
