Carli Lloyd wins the Golden Ball, Hope Solo wins Golden Glove

United States midfielder Carli Lloyd helped her team to their first World Cup win since 1999 and will also take home some individual silverware.

She was joined on the shortlist for the Golden Ball by teammates Julie Johnston and Megan Rapinoe, while Celia Sasic beat out Lloyd for the Golden Boot due to the amount of minutes played. Lloyd scored in each of the United States’ four knockout-stage games, including the goal-of-the-tournament in the final. She had gone 5-0-2 in an interim role in 2012, was given the job on an interim basis again after Sermanni’s departure and then was appointed head coach in May 2014.

Already a two-time Olympic gold medallist, she became just the second American to win the Golden Ball, joining Carin Jennings, who won the award in 1991, and her performance immediately earned her the seal of approval from United States President Barack Obama. Solo conceded her first goal of the tournament 27 minutes into Team USA’s tournament-opening win over Australia. “Come visit the White House with the World Cup soon”, Obama tweeted.

In an image shared on Instagram, the USA team can be seen in the locker room popping bottles and cheering proudly-with Lloyd and the trophy front and centre. France’s Amandine Henry was given Silver Boot as the second-best player with Japan’s Aya Myama winning the Bronze Ball.

Solo now has won the Golden Gloves Award at two consecutive World Cups, but something tells us this one might be dearer to her than the honor she won in 2011.
