Patriots bring Wayne in for a physical
The rivalry will only intensify if Wayne signs in New England, especially with a Week 6 matchup between New England and Indy looming as a possible date for Brady’s return from a four-game suspension.
Of course, signing Wayne would also be a good way for the Patriots to fire back at the Colts, the team that prompted the Deflategate investigation in January. Prior rumors seemed to indicate that the Carolina Panthers would push hard to sign him after Kelvin Benjamin got hurt, but the Patriots might have stolen him away.
Patriots coach Bill Belichick has always been an admirer of Wayne’s. [He’s] obviously a real smart and experienced guy; knows how to set up routes, make all of his routes look the same, does a great job of releasing and then at the top of his routes being able to create separation at just the right time when the quarterback is ready to throw.
Wayne, 36, would be competing with fellow veteran Brandon Gibson and others for a roster spot if he signed with New England.
Wayne was the Colts franchise leader in regular season games played with 211.
Former Colts WR Reggie Wayne arrived in New England last night and is taking a physical with the Patriots today, per league sources. The former Pro Bowl receiver who made a spectacular career with the Colts catching passes from Peyton Manning is expected to undergo a physical Sunday in Foxboro. I just assumed he’d hang them up at this point as he’s just not the same player anymore.
