Yanks place CC Sabathia on DL, knee injury could end season
The table setters are once again down for the count, and for the Yankees that holds significance.
While the Yankees have not publicly stated Sabathia will be out for the season, it’s a possibility they may be facing for the final six weeks of the regular season and potentially the postseason. “I feel like I can pitch at this level”.
The player of the game goes to shortstop Francisco Lindor, who’s go-ahead home run in the eighth inning was a thing of enormous beauty. He entered the game as a pinch-hitter in the fifth and drew an intentional walk against the right-handed Rumbelow.
Of course, during all of this time the powerful Cookie Carrasco proved himself among the most valuable to the Indians cause as he struck out 11 Imperial guards, while allowing just one run in an out shy of seven innings of work.
Garrett Richards (12-10) was charged with nine runs and 10 hits in five-plus innings. Ellsbury singled and Gardner homered to right. It was the third time he issued at least six walks (also April 6, 2013, at Tampa Bay and May 1, 2013 vs. Philadelphia).
As if spurred by the action, Ja ” h”on Kipnis returned late with a ground-rule double that setup a major victory.
It was a dark time for the Cleveland Indians.
In other Yankees lefthander news from the same game, Andy Pettitte had his No. 46 retired by the team, one day after longtime teammate Jorge Posada was honored by New York. Luis Severino has performed well in his first taste of Major League Baseball action, but he’s already thrown a career high 122 innings, and he could run out of steam as the season comes to an end.
The double spoiled a good effort from Trevor Bauer, who allowed two runs on two singles in 6 1-3 innings.
Cleveland manager Terry Francona was ejected in the third for arguing with second-base umpire Dan Iassogna after it appeared that Didi Gregorius was pulled off the bag by a wide throw from first baseman Greg Bird on what was ruled a force play for the second out of the inning.
Coming across the bag, Gregoruis had to come up on his toes to glove the ball. “But obviously he’s pretty sore, or he wouldn’t have come out of the game yesterday”. He had fluid drained from it before the All-Star break, and said he received a cortisone injection early last week. He grounded out in his second at-bat Tuesday and was very slow getting down the baseline. The knuckleballing right-hander overcame a 39-pitch first in which he gave up an RBI triple by Mike Trout, run-scoring hits by C.J. Cron and rookie Kaleb Cowart, and two sacrifice flies.
It was the first legitimate rally since starter CC Sabathia left the game with two outs in the third, but it wasn’t enough as the Yankees lost, 4-3, at the Stadium. The official word from the New York Yankees was that he injured his knee, but there were unsourced and unconfirmed non-rumors that it was due to him taking off a mask that was sustaining his breathing.
