Wimbledon 2015: Roger Federer eases into quarterfinals
Number two seed Roger Federer suggests that Spanish opponent Roberto Bautista Agut may not have been on his best game during their fourth-round clash at Wimbledon.
In the third, he won 100 percent of his first service points and gave no window for Bautista Agut to get back into the match.
A forehand victor, followed by an unforced error handed Federer his first break point in the 5th game.
The 17-time Grand Slam victor was relentless from the baseline and wrapped up his last eight spot on his fifth match point with a 6-2 6-2 6-3 win in 86 minutes.
The pair have matched up on two previous occasions, Federer winning both in straight sets. Adam Davy/PA Wire Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain hits the ball during his match against Roger Federer of Switzerland at the Wimbledon Tennis Championships in London, July 6, 2015.
All in all it is pretty easy to see why Federer is being heavily backed as the favourite, with Agut a $13.00 outsider.
“Gilles Simon is one of the best return players we have in the game”, Federer said.
Nadal lost 7-5, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 to the qualifier from Germany, who frustrated the Spaniard throughout with his aggressive serve-and-volley style.
Cilic, the 2014 USA Open champion, will play the victor of the match between Serbian world No. 1 Novak Djokovic and South Africa’s Kevin Anderson. “I was hoping to get out of the blocks early and get going”. Federer has played 10 sets overall and four and a half hours of tennis. But he should be no match for an in-form Federer, who is showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
He said: “No, I don’t think I made a statement”. With his opening three matches firmly behind him, Federer will next contest a fourth round encounter against Roberto Bautista Agut, whom he has previously crossed paths with twice on the professional tour.
“If they decide to fine me”, Kyrgios said, “they can fine me”. It is for the first time he dropped a set in this edition of Wimbledon.
“Especially on grass, that’s what it takes – I did a good job”. “So that streak’s maybe coming to an end, in my opinion”.
A marathon match on Court 12 ended in Murray and Peers triumphing 6-3 7-6 (8/6) 6-7 (5/7) 3-6 8-6 against American Jack Sock and Canadian Vasek Pospisil.
It will be Federer and Simon’s first meeting at the All England Club, but Federer leads their head-to-head series 5-2.
