Shane Greene: Greene to undergo surgery on hand Thursday
On August 19th, Greene was placed on the DL due to “numbness in his fingers” and he’s now set to undergo surgery on his shoulder to fix the problem.
Shane Greene will not be returning to the Detroit Tigers this season.
Greene (4-8, 6.88 ERA) had been experiencing numbness in his fingers recently, an apparent symptom of a pseudoaneurysm that extended from the circumflex artery in his shoulder to his hand.
The surgery will be performed by Dr. Greg Pearl of the Texas Vascular Associates. “And he obviously agreed with the diagnosis of pseudoaneurysm in the circumflex artery in the shoulder”, said Kevin Rand, the head trainer for the Tigers. Looking back, the issues that will be presumably be fixed during tomorrow’s surgery could have led to Greene’s forgettable season. “He can start strengthening, and he will be cleared to resume throwing in two months”.
According to manager Brad Ausmus, he’s expected to be ready by spring training, and assuming there aren’t any setbacks, Greene should be completely healthy.
“What it was doing is the artery was trying to clot”, Rand said.
Greene debuted in the major leagues in April of past year for the Yankees, and has a career 5.38 ERA in 30 starts between New York and Detroit. Since then, he went 1-7 with a 7.16 ERA in 71 2/3 innings, including seven starts with Toledo. “As far as I know, no”.
Asked if the injury could reappear in his post-surgery future, Rand said, “I don’t know the answer to that”. That would give the Tigers a rotation of Justin Verlander, Anibal Sanchez, and Greene, with two spots to fill.
