Trump escalates attacks on journalists, tosses top Hispanic anchor from
NAHJ strongly sided with Ramos on the issue. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., left, speaks in Central, S.C., and fellow Republican candidate, real estate mogul Donald Trump, speaks in Las Vegas. “In essence, Hispanic voters tell us our party’s position on immigration has become a litmus test, measuring whether we are meeting them with a welcome mat or a closed door”. In response, Trump sued Univision.
Pointing out that the current leader of the Republican presidential field is gaining supporters by talking up a punitive, logistically impossible plan to target overwhelmingly non-white immigrants might have been a laudable “tough question” from a different journalist. Even in a setting with well-known conventions, like a White House daily briefing, reporters are constantly yelling out questions without being called on, and while it doesn’t always work, there’s about a 20% success rate.
He said he and Ailes had just gotten off a phone call together, and praised the executive as “a good friend of mine” and a “special guy”.
Ramos, who has been critical of Trump’s stance on immigration, said he was waiting for his turn to ask a question on the subject when Trump ordered him out. Trump told Ramos to “go back to Univision”.
As Ramos waited outside, a man wearing a Trump sticker on his shirt approached the Univision host and confronted him about his behavior during the press conference.
“Donald Trump kicked a Univision reporter out of his press conference so like anyone who supports him is officially a racist and I hate you”, one person tweeted.
Ramos is “one of the most prominent people in the Latino-American community”, said former Democratic candidate Howard Dead on MSNBC. “I’m a builder… What’s more complicated is building a building that’s 95 stories tall”. “We’re fighting for respect”. “Ramos was simply trying to hold a candidate for president accountable for statements he made about a very important topic to the American people”.
Millions of viewers watch his Spanish-language newscasts every weeknight. That represents a much larger audience than what CNN’s Wolf Blitzer pulls in the hour.
“Go back to Univision”, Trump told Ramos, an anchor for the network. The network’s ratings success with telenovelas imported from Mexico has spilled over to his program in the last 30 years. He’s derided groups and individuals of all stripes, from Mexicans to Asians to TV news anchors. And so far in the rollicking 2016 presidential contest, hes showing little willingness to dial down his because-I-said-so style.
As Diaz-Balart tried to jump back in to finish his question, Trump shot him down. You know how it is in those press conferences.
Shortly thereafter, Ramos was allowed back in the room and had another opportunity to pepper the GOP frontrunner with questions. “Mixing the two is not correct”.
