Texas Street Renamed to Honor Sandra Bland
Last night, the Prairie View city council passed a proposal to rename the road leading to Prairie View A&M University after Bland. Meanwhile, multiple law enforcement agencies continue to investigate the circumstances of Bland’s death and arrest, though it is not clear when that investigation will be completed.
The street was renamed after Sandra Bland because it was the same street where she was arrested before subsequently dying in her jail cell.
The vote came after an afternoon of demonstrations backing the move.
The group marched from the university to Prairie View City Hall, where the council meeting was held, according to reports. Bland was pulled over in July for failing to signal a lane change.
Bland was booked in the Waller County Jail for three days, while family members and close friends worked to gather money for her bail on charges that she assaulted Encinia. Her death, which sparked national outrage, was ruled a suicide by hanging. One woman told Eyewitness she believes what happened to Bland is tragic, but there are people who have done much more for the Prairie View community and who are much more deserving of such an honor than Bland.
