Samsung Launches 2TB SSDs For PCs
Samsung is flogging a pair of 2TB solid-state drive (SSD) internal hard drives aimed at the consumer market. The lesser capacities up to 1TB of the pro drive are on the market for a year and people of the Evo drive, concerning seven months. With no moving parts, the Samsung portable SSD T1 is also created to withstand more shock impact3 and more vibrations than alternative storage solutions with sensitive moving components.
The newest members of Samsung’s SSD family are powered by the company’s proprietary 3D Vertical NAND (V-NAND) technology, which it first unveiled in 2013.
However, Samsung SSDs, the non-Samsung HDDs division that’s now under Seagate, launched its new 850 Evo and 850 Pro SSDs that come with 2TB of storage space and also have quite an affordable price.
Performance specs on the two drives haven’t been disclosed yet, but we’d expect the 850 Pro to be moderately faster than the 850 EVO, which uses TLC NAND and an SLC cache buffer to boost overall performance.
Un-Soo Kim, Samsung’s senior vice president of branded product marketing, said the company has experienced a surge in demand for 500GB and higher capacity SSDs with the introduction of V-NAND flash memory. Sequential read/write speeds for the Evo are 540MBps and 520MBps respectively, while the Pro is slightly faster, featuring 550MBps and 520MBps. The software isn’t magic in itself, but it does allow you to turn on the built-in RAPID mode on the Pro and Evo SSDs.
Samsung 850 Pro was reviewed by Computerworld a year ago and it was found to be quick and cheap. Both have an available capacity of 1908GB once formatted.
