Landry Parish authorities investigate reports of officer shot in Sunset

Three people in the convenience store in Sunset managed to escape, police said.

Edmonson said that the officer who was shot was “responsive” but had no details on the officer’s injury or those of the other two people who were shot.

Nelson – one of six officers under Sunset Police Chief Luis Padilla – was the second Louisiana police officer killed in four days and the fifth in four months.

The suspect stabbed two other individuals and fled to a almost convenience store blocks away.

Wiley was barricaded in the store and involved in a standoff with SWAT for more than two hours, CBS News reported. “It went to hell in a hand basket from there”, Guidroz said. The condition of the officer and stabbing victims are now unknown. Another patient is also being reportedly transported to a hospital via St. Landry EMS.

Sunset is a town of about 2,900 in St. Landry Parish, 13 miles north of Lafayette. Guidroz says Riley is being held for observation after complaining of a hurt rib.

The suspect then drove his vehicle to the mini-mart where there were three people inside: the store owner, a cook and a customer.

Louisiana State Troopers called the suspect’s brother to the location on Martin Luther King Drive in order to negotiate with the gunman.
