Apple Inc. (AAPL) Ex-CEO Wants Premium at Knock-Down Price
Obi Mobiles was co-founded by John Sculley, former President of Apple and Pepsi-Cola, serial entrepreneurs Neeraj Chauhan, Shane Maine and Gordon McMillan. After teaming up with Ammunition design founder Robert Brunner, the company has since released two new smartphones.
The first one is the Obi Worldphone SF1, a phone that packs some potent kick for the price tag it flaunts. But of course, there are still those who know what geeks really want and how much there are willing to pay, being geeks themselves, like Ammunition who has recently announced the Obi Worldphone. Obi has mentioned that it will launch the SF1 and SJ1.5 in 50 to 70 countries by 2017. The SF1 has a raised 5-inch display made of durable Corning Gorilla Glass 4 – an instantly recognizable signature element that emphasizes the interplay of the hardware with the user interface.
The new Android smartphone has been launched in two different models. The SF1 features a Snapdragon 615 proc with 2 gigs of RAM and 16 gigs of storage space. The whole shebang is fitted in a body with a dimensions of 146 x 74 x 8mm and weighs 147gr.
The sub-$250 Android devices look to carry out Obi Worldphone’s mission statement of bringing premium-quality phones to the world’s developing markets (namely Asia, Africa and the Middle East). The SJ1.5 sports front and rear cameras and is protected by scratch-resistant Corning® Gorilla® Glass 3.
Both phones come with the funky Obi Lifespeed custom skin on top of Android 5.1 Lollipop, as well as the dual-SIM slots that are so essential in emerging markets. It’s powered by a MediaTek MT6580 Quad-Core processor and has a 5-inch HD Gorilla Glass 3 display, dual SIM slots and 16GB of internal storage with expandable memory. Its design is also pretty good-looking, even more when you consider that Obi asks $119 for it. It also comes with a unibody that boasts an unorthodox shape (flatter at the top, slightly curved at the bottom).
All sounds great, right?
The handsets will be initially available across Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kenya, Nigeria, Tanzania, South Africa, Pakistan and Turkey.
