‘Terminator,’ ‘Magic Mike’ Fizzle At July 4th Box Office
There were no fireworks for Terminator Genisys at the holiday weekend box office as Inside Out and Jurassic World once again secured the top two slots, almost tying for No. 1.
For the fourth consecutive week, “Jurassic World” held off the competition and retained the top spot at the box office.
However three years later we learn things haven’t quite turned out to be the ideal ending for Mike, so he joins up with his fellow Kings of Tampa male entertainment for one last performance at a stripper convention. Jurassic World, starring Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, gained a $43.8 million at 3,737 locations and secured the fourth position in the highest domestic grosser of all time with $568.2 million.
Warner Bros. also tried to expand the weekend, opening Tatum’s male-stripper romp “Magic Mike XXL” on Wednesday. So Minions should post some pretty big numbers in the weeks to come.
Megan Colligan, head of worldwide distribution for Paramount, said the weekend simply didn’t play like a holiday weekend. “Our start was just not where it needed to be”.
Jurassic World and Inside Out are proving to be unbeatable box office juggernauts.
But how did the other films do at the box office?
Estimated ticket gross sales for Friday via Sunday at D.R. and Canadian theaters, in line with Rentrak. “Luckily for the series” new distributor Paramount, overseas audiences were more eager to see Arnold Schwarzenegger back in action. Sixth and seventh installments are reportedly on deck. Terminator Genisys was predicted to make between $50 and $60 million for the five-day frame but instead pulled in only $42 million. “In the end, how we perform globally is what matters”. With major markets like Japan and Germany still to open, and China not yet setting a release date, the road ahead could be bright and the worldwide total should eventually break the $400M mark.
Although he wouldn’t label Magic Mike a feminist movie – as some media outlets have done – Carolin said it did treat women as independent characters, “people with their own voice that aren’t there to service the men in the movie”. An estimated 73 percent of moviegoers were older than 25. Critics were even less kind – the movie has only a 27% fresh rating according to review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes.
Those figures did represent a 5% improvement over previous year, when films like “Tammy” and “Deliver Us From Evil” fell short, sending receipts to their lowest levels since 2001.
“These are the weekends everybody’s going, ‘Wow, what occurred?'” stated Dergarabedian.
The event featured main stars Channing Tatum and Joe Manganiello on the red carpet as well as writer/producer Reid Carolin and director Gregory Jacobs.
The sequel to the surprise 2012 hit, was not as big as analysts thought it would be over the holiday weekend. It cost less than $15 million to make. Also opening on Wednesday, the Channing Tatum-led movie now hosts $26.6 million in the bank so far. With a stellar per-screen average of $37,000, its release is likely to expand in the very near future. The film is being released by A24.
