Giants aware of Pierre-Paul’s fireworks injury
Despite social media speculation, he did not lose any fingers, and it doesn’t seem like his injuries are career threatening at this time. It’s been roughly 36 hours since Pierre-Paul’s fireworks accident and he remains under medical care.
Nagging injuries limited Pierre-Paul in 2012 and 2013, when his sack totals dropped well below the 161/2 he registered in 2011. Pierre-Paul started all 16 games, posted 12.5 sacks and forced three fumbles last season.
There was very little chance that Pierre-Paul was going to sign the long-term contract offer the Giants had on the table, which was expected to pay him around $30 million guaranteed. He had yet to sign his $14.8-million franchise tender since he has until the July 15 deadline to negotiate the long-term deal that he was hoping for.
Jason Pierre-Paul’s status for 2015 is reportedly up in the air. He had a good 2014 season, and the Giants ended up putting the franchise tag on him after the season.
In what would be a drastic and very unlikely scenario, the Giants also could rescind the franchise tender, but that would make Pierre-Paul a free agent immediately.
Pierre-Paul remained hospitalized in Miami on Monday morning and was scheduled to be examined by more doctors later in the day.
The full extent is still unknown, as is the status for Pierre-Paul to reporting to Giants camp, which begins at the end of July.
The Giants open the season against the Cowboys but don’t play the Eagles until Week 6.
Bleacher Report’s Jason Cole and Fox Sports’ Mike Garafolo tweeted confirmations that Pierre-Paul sustained a hand injury in a fireworks accident Saturday night, but were initially unable to confirm the severity. And now, because of just that, Pierre-Paul’s future with the Giants may come to an early end.
