Weekend Movies: O Say, Can You See?
As you would expect, the visual effects in “Terminator Genisys” are wonderful but how many times can you blow up San Francisco? Ending the wait for the fan boys, this rendition of Terminator will also witness the comeback of the legendary Arnold Schwarzenegger with veteran director Alan Taylor veering this film into a new direction.
Those looking for equally less thought-provoking substance can turn to “Magic Mike XXL,” though they may still leave the theaters disappointed. But when Resistance leader John Connor sends gung-ho Kyle Reese back to 1984, everything is different from the first go-round. It seems you must be nude to use the time machine, but near the end of the movie, Arnold transports himself through time fully clothed. It’s going to send a Terminator back in time to kill John Connor’s mother, Sarah. In the film, Schwarzenegger’s character, Gaurdian along with Connor and Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) will try to save the world from the machines, which will be taking over the world. However, when Kyle reaches there, he finds out it is a cycle that has been happening again and again over the years, and that there is already another Terminator to protect Sarah from others. In a sense that, that relationship exclusively exists for the production of John Connor. And the moment that discovery kicks in is when this movie takes off, with really cool new plot twists all over the place.
“One of the themes that we wanted to explore that was really the heart of the movie was the notion of this dysfunctional family”, Ellison told Hero Complex.
However, Schwarzenegger, 67, is one of the biggest (figuratively and literally) stars in the history of Hollywood with his films totaling nearly $2 billion at the US box office over a almost 40 year career.
Cameronesque one-liners pepper “Genisys“, perhaps the most memorable coming from the 67-year-old Schwarzenegger’s ageing Terminator character, who is forced to do battle with newer models. And that’s insulting to both, people who grew up with the “Terminator” films and newcomers.
We can’t say we concur with Mr Schwarzenegger on that one, in truth.
Also starring J.K. Simmons, Dayo Okeniyi, Courtney B. But if you’re going wanting to see something as good as the first two films then I’m afraid you’ll be rather disappointed. The two had a tradition of watching Terminator movies together, and when they saw the latest installment, he said his father smiled for the first time in months.
