BBC Sport – Bavalan Pathmanathan dies after being struck in chest by ball
A cricketer has died after being struck on the chest by a ball during a local league game in Surrey.
Bavalan Pathmanathan was playing for Hersham based Manipay Parish Sports Club when the incident happened on Sunday evening. We sent three ambulance cars, two ambulance crews – including one from London Ambulance Service – and the air ambulance.
Pathmanathan was treated at the scene and then taken into Kingston Hospital in a serious condition.
Chief Executive Richard Gould Surrey County Cricket Club expressed grief over the incidence and said all of his team mates are heavily grieved over the death of Bavalan.
Despite attempts at resuscitation and receiving treatment from air ambulance doctors and crew, Pathmanathan later died from his injuries. He showed his sympathy to the friends and family of dead cricketer.
His untimely loss has left a devastating effect on our member clubs and on our cricket community as a whole.
Pathmanathan’s teammate, who was batting at the other end, said he initially looked alright after being hit before collapsing on the field. He gave a thumbs-up and nodded to indicate he was alright, while pressing his chest.
The website also said the cricketer was an old student at Hartley College in Jaffna, Sri Lanka.
Last year, Australian batsman Phillip Hughes died after being hit on the head by a bouncer during a domestic match.
