Shane Mosley, 43, knocks out Ricardo Mayorga, 41, in the sixth round
The 41 year-old, without a significant win in ten years, was drawn out of obscurity to give Mosley the platform to put himself back in contention for big fights, something the American did with relative ease. It really didn’t matter though because Mayorga was out of his class, and not in good enough shape to compete with Mosley in this fight. However, when the two squared off, nearly all the condemnation became an afterthought. Mayorga weighed in heavy at seven pounds over the agreed upon weight and forfeited part of his purse. Despite being clearly outclassed, Mayorga threw caution to the wind and decided to entertain. Mosley, however, was unfazed by Mayorga’s antics and continued to pepper his foe with power shots. According to his own court testimony (in a successful bid to stave off the attack of Don King, who claimed rights to Mayorga), only between 2,000 and 3,000 tickets had been sold as of Monday and the $50 PPV card will be in direct competition with the much more appealing Leo Santa Cruz vs. Abner Mares bout on “free” ESPN. Pisani is Shane Mosley’s girlfriend and business partner, and Mayorga’s asinine action naturally enraged both Pisani and Mosley. Mayorga wasn’t too happy about the stoppage though, as he felt that Mosley had nailed him low with the shot.
This pathetic, macho nonsense is typical of Mayorga, who in the past has made a habit of challenging his opponents’ masculinity while threatening to sleep with their partners.
The 43-year-old Mosley delivered a powerful left to the Nicaraguan’s body which sent him to the floor. In obvious pain, Mayorga remained on the canvas while he was counted out. It appears Mosley wants a little more time in the limelight-and a little more money in his bank account. “He talked a lot with his mouth, but I talk with my fists and I was definitely going to go for the knockout and that’s what we got”.
